Welcome

Dr. Janet Baumann PH.D, LCSW

I work with people in individual, group, couples and family therapy. I try to help people understand themselves better, become more comfortable with themselves, improve their relationships with others and achieve their personal and career goals. I specialize in the treatment of trauma as well as eating disorders.

I work with people who have experienced trauma and with anorectics, bulimics and compulsive eaters as well as people with other problems. I have worked with people from a variety of cultural, ethnic and faith backgrounds. I am the author of Older Adults and Their Recollections of September 11, 2001: Survival and the Aftermath, 2009, VDM Publishing, Saarbrucken, Germany.

After completing my undergraduate degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois I had decided that I wanted to work with people. I went on to complete my Masters in Social Work degree at the Jane Addams School of Social Work at the Chicago Circle Campus in Chicago, Illinois. I worked for four years as a psychiatric social worker for two community mental health centers in Chicago with children, adolescents and adults before coming to New York City to pursue psychoanalytic training at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health.

I completed my training in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in 1974, and by then had established my private practice. I went on to complete certificates in Analytic Group Therapy and Supervision of the Therapeutic Process also at the Postgraduate Center. In addition I completed a Ph.D in Clinical Social Work at the NYU Silver School of Social Work.

When an opportunity arose to work with anorectics and bulimics in individual and group therapy in 1983, I completed a training program in the treatment of eating disorders at the Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia. I have also earned a certificate from the Eating Disorders, Compulsions and Addictions program at William Alanson White. In addition, while at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, I worked with Ron Taffel Ph.D and studied couples and family therapy.
